While working at LSU, I was responsible for performing modifications to MIT's Java Radio Telescope software, so that we could remote-control it over the internet. This was particularly challenging because the software appeared to be designed for a low-latency connection to the hardware.
I made modifications to the Java software, and wrote a Visual Basic server that interfaced to the hardware. The server also predicted what data the client would ask in an effort to hide the latency of the network connection.
The end result is that when users start the Java software, they are prompted for their username, password, and hostname of the server. After being verified by the server, the users have full control -- just as if they were locally connected.
